Passing of a Legend: Eddie Robinson (1919-2007)

Posted Apr 4th 2007 10:22AM by Cheryl Thompson
Filed under: Casually Obsessed

Eddie RobinsonEddie Robinson, one of the greatest football coaches of all time, dies at 88.

His stats show he could easily be ranked among the Top 5 all-time coaches -- winning 408 games and sending 200 players to the NFL, including a guy you may've heard of: Super Bowl MVP quarterback Doug Williams.

Robinson's talent was so great that even during the Jim Crow south era; he received praise from white coaches such as the likes of legendary Alabama coach Paul "Bear" Bryant.

His resume is loaded with stats, but Robinson was bigger than football. He didn't just put boys in the NFL. He helped those boys become men. Young men who went on to become fathers, leaders, and great members of society.

Rest in peace, Coach.

8. I send my deepest and sincere sympathy to the Robinson's immediate and extended family members. I had the pleasure of meeting Coach Robinson and his wife Doris when they were attending his cousin, Lester McKinley's funeral in San Francisco, CA. I remember how kind and gracious he was. We took a photo together which he autographed. I will cherish it forever.

9. Coach Robinson was a class act, who showed passion for teaching boys how to become men. The moment I remember most was his last game as a coach, I cried with him, seeing that he was leaving behind something he cared and gave so much to. I hope the black NFL players get their act together, you owe coach Robinson for opening up the doors to tne NFL

10. I will never forget Coach Robinson. The frist time I saw him was, I use to run up and down the bleachers in the evening and coach Rob was setting in the benches and he looked at me and said which one of my boys you like. I smiled and said, "I just got here" I dont know any of them yet and we laughed. My deepest sympathy goes out to the family. Yes, we have lost a legend, but God has gained a diamond....................

12. My sympathy goes out to the Robinson family, I will never forget my first year at Grambling(1961) I use to always see "COACH ROB" around the campus, usually had a big smile, unless he was thinking hard.May god give you the strength to carry on, he would want that.

DORIS J. GLOVER at 7:21PM on Apr 5th 2007

13. I remember being mesmerized on Sunday mornings as a kid watching those Grambling games on television in the 1970s in my native Pittsburgh. I just remember how phenomenal Grambling was but what was most intriguing to me as I got more into professional football how many teams in the NFL had Grambling players and how classy, disciplined and dignified the players were. I always say a player is a reflection of his coach and those adjectives described of the players came from the classy, disciplined and dignified Coach Robinson.

Jason F. Houston at 7:30PM on Apr 5th 2007

14. I would like to thank Coach Eddie Robinson for being such a great influence on the Grambling community. Although, I never met him personally, I know as a Gramblinite his presence is often felt here at Grambling State University. You will be missed!

15. As a graduate of McKinley High and Southern University I have heard this name for as long as I could remember. I grew up near the street named in his honor and I admired his work. He has always been a household name and a LEGEND that earned to be just that....You paved the way and you deserve all the respect.
