Kanye West: Diggin' His Style

Filed under: Lifestyle, Style and Beauty, Style Spotter, Life and Style

Last week, Kanye West dropped his latest album '808s and Heartbreak' two days after performing (and winning at) the American Music Awards. West did his usual rambling post-win about making a mark in history for creating innovative music, cited Elvis as an example and even compared himself to The King! While the audience chuckled, I thought to myself 'he may be on to something'.

Kanye West wearing Pastelle jacket at American Music Awards

It's been a long time since a rap artist such as West has left an indelible mark not just on music but on style at such Elvis-like proportions. The Louis Vuitton and Nike collaborator who will release his very own rainbow bright line of clothing called Pastelle next year (he debuted the jacket worn at AMAS) has a fresh and envelope-pushing take on fashion that is often copied on a global level. Stylespotter decided to highlight the five key elements that makes Kanye, well Kanye. Peep the signature items repeated by fellow artists such Common, John Legend and Lupe Fiasco. Even Jay-Z has gone Afro-Nerd rocking horn-rimmed glasses. Need I say more?

World AIDS Day Is Over, But The Fight Against HIV/AIDS Continues

Posted Dec 2nd 2008 2:27PM by Lauren Williams
Filed under: Health News, HIV and AIDS, Life and Style

There are several HIV/AIDS observance days throughout the year -- World AIDS Day, which just passed on December 1st, is one of them. But what happens when these special days are over? It's easy to become complacent. That's why Dr. Kevin Fenton, Director of the National Center for HIV/AIDS, Viral Hepatitis, STD, and TB Prevention at the Centers for Disease Control, is dedicated to keeping the AIDS epidemic foremost in the minds of Americans, especially black Americans, who are disproportionately affected by the disease.

Fenton spoke to Black Voices about prevention efforts, outreach in the black community, and what he hopes to see by World AIDS Day 2018.

Luv Coach Q&A: Dating & Control

Posted Dec 1st 2008 3:52PM by Rebecca Brody
Filed under: Love, Life and Style

My boyfriend is very laid back, and when ever I ask him what we should do, he just tells me to pick whatever. He doesn't take any initiative when it comes to planning our dates, and I feel like I am doing all the work. Sometimes I want to just take a break and let someone else be responsible for my entertainment and happiness. He doesn't seem to understand why I am frustrated, because he thinks I should be happy that we always do what I want. This is becoming a burden on our relationship. How do I get him to step up and do his part?

The College Survival Guide

    A Fridge
Regardless of whether you have a wonderful sized meal plan, your fridge may come in handy with leftovers or when you feel like stocking it with bottled drinks.

    Computer
The convenience of a computer is essential when sending your kids off to college. Forget the hike to the computer lab across campus students need a computer in the comfort of their room. A printer comes in handy as well. Depending on whether your child plans to carry his laptop around campus, you might opt for a desk top since they're lighter on the pockets.

    Snacks
You will surely survive with off of a meal plan but it doesn't hurt to stock up on snacks when you don't feel like leaving your dorm room. Bottled water, pop corn, cereal and Ramen noodles are all low budget snacks to stock up on. Just be weary of the freshman 15.

    Things from home
Some college students suffer from homesickness the first year. It's best to surround yourself with things like photos of the family, pillows or even stuffed animals. Anything that reminds your child of home.

    MP3 Player
With all the stress that comes from school and exams, sometimes it's nice to block out the chaos in your life and even your roommate with music. It's nearly impossible to find students walking to class who aren't jamming to tunes.

    Budget
Students who enter college often come in at the ripening age of 18. A great time for credit cards. Parents beware, your child may end up ruining their credit at a young age

    Alarm Clock
When you're in college you don't have the luxury of getting awaken by your parents. It's now your responsibility to get to class on time so alarm clocks are a must. But keep your roommate in mind. You shouldn't wake him up ever morning with a blow horn alarm.

    Cleaning supplies
Now you don't necessarily need to bring in the rubber gloves, mop and gas mask but it doesn't hurt to bring along Clorox all purpose wipes for spills or dust. Vacuums and brooms come in handy too depending if you have a carpeted dorm.

    Bedding
What most parents aren't aware of is that most college beds are twin sized but extra long and require special sheets. When shopping keep your eye open for sheets that clearly state 'extra long' or else your child may come up short.

    Shower shoes
You really don't know what some people do in the shower these days. College showers are known to be creeping with germs so spare yourself the fungus and purchase flip flops for the shower. You'll thank us later!

Healthy Home Flat-Ironing

Posted Nov 30th 2008 10:24PM by Gennifer Miller
Filed under: Hair Apparent, Life and Style

For a night out or special occasion, the flat-iron can be a girl's best friend. Here are a few tips that have helped me achieve healthy, sleek hair at home!

Start with a heat protectant

Always begin with a heat protectant. Apply a serum or moisturizer to blow-dried or air-dried hair and let the product penetrate for 2-5 minutes before straightening. This product will provide a barrier between your hair and the flat-iron.

Fantasia serums or Biosilk are excellent for flat ironing because they both leave the hair light and bouncy. For those looking for natural products, Jane Carter Nourish and Shine and Hydratherma Naturals Heat Protectant are fantastic.

Work with the process

While ironing, grab each section with a rattail comb (for relaxed) or two fingers (for naturals) to help pull the hair taunt as you straighten. It will help the flat-iron work more efficiently and effectively.

From Black Friday To Cyber Monday: Kick Off Your Holiday Shopping Online

It's the day after Thanksgiving. The malls are packed. Lines stretch to the backs of stores. Desperate shoppers fight over messy piles of picked-over merchandise.

There are zero parking spaces in the packed lot. It's no wonder that some shoppers are giving up on Black Friday, historically known as the kickoff of the holiday shopping season, and beginning their holiday shopping sprees online the following Monday.

More and more online retailers -- almost 87 percent, according to a Shopzilla.com survey -- are offering "Cyber Monday" deals that rival the Black Friday sales at traditional stores.

Maria Davis: AIDS Survivor Tells Her Story

Posted Nov 26th 2008 10:53AM by Hayat Mohamed
Filed under: AIDS: 25 Years and Counting, health, testimony, Life and Style

By Hayat Mohamed, BlackVoices.com

In 1995, Maria Davis was a successful New York hip hop promoter (featured prominently on Jay-Z's first album 'Reasonable Doubt') when her world was turned upside down. An HIV test she had taken as part of an application for a life insurance policy came back positive. She had unknowingly contracted the disease from her soon-to-be husband, and three years later she was diagnosed with full-blown AIDS.

That same year, in 1998, Davis became an activist to help others learn about the dangers of HIV/AIDS. Davis represents a group that has been disproportionately affected by the AIDS epidemic in the U.S. and abroad.

According to the CDC, African-American and Hispanic women account for 80 percent of AIDS cases in the U.S., even though they represent less than a quarter of all American women. Nearly 70% of these women contracted the disease through heterosexual relations. Davis hopes to inspire others to find out their HIV status and learn safe-sex practices through her non-profit organization, Can't Be Silenced.

In honor of World AIDS Day, for which Davis is a national spokesperson, she shared her story with Black Voices.

Challenges and Progress In The Fight Against HIV/AIDS

As the 20th anniversary of World AIDS Day approaches, we still face an "uphill battle" in the fight against HIV/AIDS, said Dr. Kevin Fenton of the Centers for Disease Control.

Blacks make up 12 percent of the population but represent nearly half of both Americans living with HIV and new infections, according to CDC data.

Among those living with HIV in the black community, the groups that are most affected are women and gay or bisexual men.

Top Books of the Week 11.25.08: Slavery Is Big

Posted Nov 25th 2008 8:46AM by Karen Hunter
Filed under: Life and Style, BV Bookshelf

These are our view of the best sellers -- or at least the books we feel should be. Each week on Tuesday BV will release what we feel are the hottest black books of the week. The list is compiled by our staff of experts who have read just about everything out there (not just "black books" either) and came up with this list.

BV Books Hot Picks 11.25.08

A Mercy (Fiction) by Toni Morrison
    Knopf, $23.95

I had to read 'Beloved,' Morrison's tour de force (and winner of the Pulitzer Prize) , three times (yes, three times!) to get the mastery and genius of that book. 'A Mercy,' her first book since 'Beloved' to deal with the issue of slavery, is not so steeped in allegory and mystery, but the story is compelling all the same.

    Knopf

Recipes for the Good Life (Nonfiction) by Patti Labelle
    Simon & Schuster/Foundary/KHP, $25.00

It's Thanksgiving week. And even for those of us who can do their thing in the kitchen, we could all use a little extra help. Patti Labelle delivers with this cookbook again! The recipes are sassy, just like the author. And there are quite a few twists to some old favorites, like the macaroni and cheese. Full disclosure: this fabulous book is published by me.

    Simon & Schuster

The Hemingses of Monticello (Nonfiction-History) by Annette Gordon-Reed
    W.W. Norton & Co., $35.00

For those who don't understand the lasting effects of slavery, this is a look into the life of one of our founding fathers and the "family" he produced with his slave, Sally Hemings. Gordon-Reed is the 2008 winner of the prestigious National Book Prize and her work is an eye-opener. For those who do know their history, this book is a must-have in your library. According to Volataire, "History is nothing more than a tableau of crimes and misfortunes."

    W.W. Norton & Co.

Dying for Revenge (Fiction) by Eric Jerome Dickey
    Dutton, $25.95

From the opening page, Dickey grabs your attention in this tale of a hitman named Gideon. This is a follow up to Dickey's best sellers 'Sleeping with Strangers' and 'Waking with Enemies.' Get your seatbelt ready for this ride!

    Dutton

Trouble in My Way (Fiction, Young Adult) by Michelle Stimpson
    Pocket Books, $9.95 (paperback)

This is the story of Karis and what happens when her mother stumbles upon her diary and starts to read it! This is any young girl's worse nightmare. The way Karis handles this and growing up in general, is very well done by this author. This book would make a great gift for a young girl.

    Pocket Books

Big Words for Little People (Children's) by Jamie Lee Curtis and Laura Cornell
    Harper Collins, $16.99

Words are powerful. Words hold the keys to unlock success. Those who can master words, can master their own world. So start your children off early knowing, understanding and embracing the power of words. We know Jamie Lee Curtis as an actress but she has made quite a career detour in this genre with aplomb!

    Harper Collins

The American Journey of Barack Obama (Nonfiction/History), foreword by Edward M. Kennedy
    Little, Brown, $24.99

For those collecting Obama memorabilia and slices of this historic time, this book should be a part of the package. Produced by the editors of Life magazine -- which many of us remember growing up as one of the best magazines to chronicle history and well, life, this book is beautifully done.

American Music Awards Red Carpet Review

Posted Nov 24th 2008 10:51AM by Esther Dixon
Filed under: Style Spotter, Life and Style

Last night's American Music Awards performances were spectacular! Beyonce, I mean Sasha Fierce, killed it, Rihanna was as fierce as usual and Alicia Keys gave me goose bumps with her performance, which earned her a standing ovation.

I was somewhat disappointed with the lackluster red carpet dresses, however. Most of our starlets wore predictable dresses -- yawn -- and did not put much effort into their overall looks. Sure, there were some attempts made by Rihanna, but when don't you see her in an avant garde dress? And Alicia tried as well, but the earrings and the bindi jewelry were a bit much.

Below, check out what a few of our stars wore on the red carpet and what Style Spotter thought they should have worn.

While Rihanna's dress was a delight, this gold sequined dress (Nicole Miller, $550) would have shown off the song bird's curves.

JCPenney: "We Don't Do African-American Hair"

Posted Nov 21st 2008 4:50PM by Hayat Mohamed
Filed under: Hair Apparent, Life and Style

By Hayat Mohamed, BlackVoices.com

When Brenda McElmore showed up to get her hair dyed at a local JCPenney salon in Downey, Calif., she probably didn't expect to hear "no." Unfortunately, that's exactly what happened. According to McElmore, the receptionist at the front desk told her, "We don't do African American hair." McElmore says she was "astonished" to be denied service strictly because of her race.

After writing several letters to JCPenney about the incident, a representative responded with an apology, explaining that the "salon's receptionist did not feel [the salon's employees] had the technical proficiency to perform the service required." McElmore was not satisfied with that answer. "If you only want color -- I'm not asking for a perm or a style or anything else -- it doesn't take a special person or a special skill to do that," she said during a press conference last month .

McElmore recently called upon prominent defense attorney Gloria Allred to represent her in a lawsuit against JCPenney. In the lawsuit, Allred charges that JCPenney violated California's Unruh Civil Rights Act, which prohibits businesses from denying services based on race.

Black Hair Flipbook

Black Voices contacted Allred's office and was informed by an employee that JCPenny has yet to respond to the lawsuit; they have 30 days to do so.

This incident raises an important question: "Should hairdressers be equipped to do all types of hair regardless of where they work?"

Luv Coach Q&A: Law & Marriage

My girlfriend and I have been dating for four years, and we had planned to get married next year in California. Right after the law past last spring that gave the right for same sex couples to marry, my girlfriend pulled out a ring and asked me to marry her. She had bought it the year before, and was waiting for it to be legal for us to wed. I immediately set about planning my dream wedding, and we were going to have it next May in Santa Barbara. Now that proposition 8 has passed, we are no longer allowed to get married. I lost it, and threw a huge crying fit. I don't know what to do. I sent out invitations, hired a venue, caterers, picked a dress, a cake, and I am so angry right now, I can't see straight. What do I do?
