The loss, however, came from a stand-in fighter. Slice was supposed to fight Ken Shamrock, but Shamrock was unable to fight due to a cut over his left eye he got while training. The stand-in, Seth Petruzelli, stepped in and defeated Slice in about 14 seconds.

When the fight began Slice aggressively went after Petruzelli. But in the commotion, Petruzelli caught Slice on the jaw with his right hand, stunning him to the ground. As soon as Slice hit the ground, Petruzelli pounced on him and started reigning blows on Slice's head and face. The referee quickly stepped in and stopped the fight.

"It was an opportunity to step up," Petruzelli told ESPN after the fight. "This is something I wanted all my life."

"It's all good," added Slice, who fell to 3-1. "It was unexpected, but it's all good."

MMA critics have continually said that Slice is overrated and wouldn't be able to hang against a quality MMA opponent, There's no word on when Slice's next fight will be, but the expected bout with Brett Rogers will be a little while down the road. Slice may end up fighting Shamrock next, but there hasn't been an announcement yet, but we're sure Slice will want a rematch with Petruzelli. Sparks' Candace Parker has already won an Olympic Gold medal, a national college championship and college player of the year honors, but it appears that it's not enough. On Friday, the WNBA awarded Parker the league MVP trophy as well as Rookie of the Year honors, making her the first player to win both trophies in the same year.

"You know, Coach (Michael) Cooper set this goal for me early on, and I looked at him like he was crazy,'' Parker told NBC Sports. "He's like, 'We're going to win the rookie of the year, and you're going to win a championship and you're going to win the MVP.' I just looked at him like, 'That's what you expect of me already?'''

The Sparks didn't make it to the finals this year, after being ousted by the San Antonio Silver Stars, but like most fans, you can see a WNBA Championship in Parker's future. She was the #1 pick in the draft this season and averaged 18.5 points and 9.5 rebounds a game. Plus, homegirl can dunk.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

SPONSORED BY: BOLD MOVES: THE FUTURE OF FORD Step behind the curtain at Ford Motor. Smith-Livingstone Rivalry, The Cradle of HBCU Football

Filed under: Casually Obsessed, Sports, HBCUs
When Johnson C. Smith and Livingstone renew the oldest and original HBCU rivalry Saturday in Charlotte, there's reason to celebrate.

The two schools played the first black college football game on Dec. 27, 1892 in Salisbury, N.C., which Smith (then Biddle Institute) won 5-0.

Back in those days, a touchdown was worth five points, marching bands hadn't been invented and football wasn't played in front of tens of thousands of fans in state of the art stadiums. Heck, even video games were nearly 90 years into the future. ...

While Biddle and Livingstone didn't invent the game, they did create a distinct branch that has grown into a special part of America's sports and social fabric.

Without HBCUs, some of what makes the Saturday game day experience wouldn't exist, not to mention the opportunities afforded to the brightest lights in college history. Think about the legacy of men like Jerry Rice, Eddie Robinson, "Too Tall" Jones and Jake Gaither; the elevation of halftime battles of marching bands to cult-like status, and of course, homecoming. It's been a great ride over the last 116, and we owe a passing debt of gratitude to a pair of small N.C. colleges that started it all.

By the way, Smith leads the series 37-20-2.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

SPONSORED BY: BOLD MOVES: THE FUTURE OF FORD Step behind the curtain at Ford Motor. The magazine asked 25 panelists of athletes, executives, marketers, writers, and academics to rank their top 20 out of 300 names . They were asked to consider how each individual rates vs. his or her peers; how much money each controls, generates, or influences; and the breadth and staying power of their impact.

In the #1 spot was none other than Tiger Woods. What more can be said? NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, NBA commissioner David Stern, ESPN president George Bodenheimer, and NBC Sports Chairman Dick Ebersol round out the top five respectively.

Michael Jordan didn't make the list until the #9 spot and LeBron James barely made the top 20 at #17. Kobe Bryant (#28), Alex Rodriguez (#45), Derek Jeter (#51), Magic Johnson (#58), and Serena Williams (#100) all made the list. Our fellow sports heads at YouBeenBlinded.com have posted an interview and video of Ron Ron talking about his love for hip-hop and promoting his mixtape and the artists on his record label, TruWarier Records.

"Hip hop is almost like a religion," Artest said in a posted interview. "It's an expression of mainly pain and suffering. I think rap is more of a job, and hip-hop is more about expression. Hip- hop has been heavily watered down and knocked off course by the big money makers. There are many artists who are scared to make music for themselves, and they cater to the boss with grey hair or light skin who has never ever been caught in a cross fire, or been racially profiled, or cut in the face, or been face-to-face with multiple crack heads. The hip-hop I'm accustomed to is Rakim. Rakim should be able to say what's hip-hop and what's not. And give the other good music a different genre. Hip-hop is also influenced by God, meaning artists like Run-DMC and positive hip-hop. I think gangster rap is a fake. This year's rookie class is solid. Many of the RBs are leading their teams in rushing and there are two rookie QBs (Joe Flacco and Matt Ryan) who are starting for their respective teams.

2. The St. Louis Rams fired Scott Linehan. Remember during the Kurt Warner days when they were the "Greatest Show on Turf"? Well, at least Marc Bulger should be the starting QB again.

3. Forget Carmen San Diego? Where in the world is Vince Young? Well, clearly the Titans don't need him because they are 4-0.

4. Lane Kiffin just got fired. How about Marvin Lewis?

5. The Cincinnati Bengals are 0-4, and this is a far cry from the team that was two years removed from AFC Playoffs. They have weapons all over their offense and now it looks like Carson Palmer is not the fantasy stud he used to be.

6. Ben Roethlisberger is turning into the human piñata in Pittsburgh due to the hits he is taken on nearly every play. Why didn't the Steelers draft any help on the offensive line?

7. What happened to the Indianapolis Colts? Injuries and age are finally catching up with them.

8. Why did the Vikings throw QB Tarvaris Jackson into the fire so early? He throws a beautiful deep ball but he needs to work on his intermediate and touch throws.

9. Lions fans were finally put out of their misery. The Matt Millen-era of mediocre teams and WR-drafting is finally over!

10. Brett Favre is still Brett Favre. However, I want to see how he is going to react when the honeymoon is over and the NYC media starts ripping him for his play.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

SPONSORED BY: BOLD MOVES: THE FUTURE OF FORD Step behind the curtain at Ford Motor. She performed as a line judge in the Stillman College vs. Tuskegee University, making her way as the first woman to officiate a NCAA Division II, Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference's (SIAC) college football game.

"Mentally, it was exhausting with all of the attention placed on my being the first female to officiate in the conference, but because I had a job to do, I remained focused throughout the game," Philpart-Brunson told the South Florida Times. "The coaches and the players welcomed me for my professionalism and I'm glad to have that first game in this conference behind me, and will continue to increase my knowledge so I can perfect my craft. I urge other women to pursue this type of a career, and not to be discouraged, because it can be done."

The Tuskegee University Golden Tigers defeated Stillman College 42-7. Philpart-Brunson began officiating in 1995 with youth and high school football games and started attending NCAA officiating camps in the early 2000's. Her ultimate goals however is to where the black and white uniform as an official in the NFL.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

SPONSORED BY: BOLD MOVES: THE FUTURE OF FORD Step behind the curtain at Ford Motor. This time its Chicago Bears wide receiver Brandon Lloyd going by the moniker B. Lloyd. He's been dabbling in hip-hop for a little while now, but he's just released a new single, "She All Mine" featuring Bobby Valentino that could possibly turn into a hit.

"'She All Mine' is about a man who feels that his relationship with his lady is about more than the lovemaking." Lloyd said in a statement. "I knew Bobby Valentino's voice would be a perfect fit for the song and he blessed me by being willing to grace the song of an up-and-coming artist. Not everyone is willing to do that."

The song is currently available on iTunes and is the first single from his upcoming album, Masters of Ceremony, which hits stores on February 2, 2009. As far as the other songs on his personal website and on his MySpace page? They need some tweaking. Regardless, Lloyd is dedicated to making the music thing work. He's already made one dream come true by getting in the NFL.

"I knew I wanted to be in the NFL when I was in kindergarten." Lloyd said. "I once got sent to the principal's office for saying I wanted to be a professional football player in class when the teacher asked us what we wanted to be when we grew up. The teacher said it was an 'unrealistic goal.' My mom and dad had always told me I could do anything I wanted. Just give it 100% and I can attain it."

Check out the song, what do you think?

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

SPONSORED BY: BOLD MOVES: THE FUTURE OF FORD Step behind the curtain at Ford Motor. The baller told People Magazine he's been on the diet since August to get ready for the upcoming NBA season.

"I know Queen Latifah, and when I saw her out there using it, I thought maybe I could use it, too, to work on my health and fitness goals and inspire others," Davis told People. "In the off-season, it's kind of hard to maintain day-to-day. I don't want to get up and cook. And when I pig out, I'm the type of person where there's no limit to what I can do."

Davis won't reveal how much weight he's lost since he's been on the diet until an upcoming press conference, but he does say it's working. He's even getting some of his friends on to the diet; of course, after they clowned him first.

"They were like, 'Huh? Why is Jenny Craig in your fridge? Why are you eating this?'" he said. Of course, Oprah Winfrey is at the #1 spot again dropping more than $50 million in donations last year. As far as athletes, Michael Jordan came in at #7, donating $5 million to Hales Franciscan High School, a historically African-American all-boys school in Chicago, and New Jersey Nets forward Richard Jefferson came in at #12 for donating $3.5 million to the University of Arizona for a new basketball and volleyball facility.

Tiger Woods is ranked 18th after donating $1.3 million to the Tiger Woods Learning Center in Anaheim, California while Tracy McGrady is at #20 for donating a cool $1 million to the Stand Up Darfur organization and related projects. Former San Antonio Spur, David Robinson and his wife Valerie ranked 29th after donating close to $780,000 to the David Robinson Foundation which supports the Carver Academy and various mentoring and hunger programs. New England Patriots defensive end, Richard Seymour, rounds out the top 30 by donating more than $724,000 to his Richard Seymour BGC Foundation which hosts youth camps and health fairs. Most of the funds will go towards a $60 million renovation of the Pit, the arena where the New Mexico Lobo basketball team plays.

"I want to give something back to the school because I'm a Lobo fanatic and this is a great way for me to do that," Granger told the Indiana Star.

According to UNM athletics director Paul Krebs, Granger's donation is the largest given by any living person in the history of the University.

"Any leadership gift of this magnitude is greatly appreciated and very meaningful," Krebs said. Now with the Houston Rockets, Artest emailed Sam Amick of the Sacramento Bee and shared his thoughts on what Josh Howard did.

"I think Josh Howard's comment is a reflection on education," Artest wrote. "I think the schools need to teach deeper in the history classes and make the students aware of racism but also teach them that all people are not bad. I can relate to not feeling wanted by my own country at times but as I dug deeper I realized that America is divided and we need leaders to bring America closer together. An example where I felt unwanted by my country was when I didn't get a chance to try out for my national team. I believed it was because of my history. I hope he overcomes this."

Apparently Howard has apologized internally to Cuban and the Mavericks but he has yet to make a public apology. Mavericks owner Mark Cuban defended his player and talked about it a bit in the media this week. But after Cuban's remarks, the racists came out of the woodwork and started emailing him. Being the man he is, Cuban put the emailers on blast, posting their emails with their full names and email address on his blog.

"I wanted to thank all of you who took the time to email me with your comments on how best to deal with Josh," Cuban wrote on his blog. "They were so good, I thought I would share a few of them with everyone. Including the email addresses of those who were bold enough to use real email addresses. Josh realizes his comments were wrong, he understands why people are upset. He knows he has made a mistake, has apologized and will work with us . Beyond that, its a private issue."

The note is followed by a long list of emails referring to Howard as a the n-word and even calls Cuban a "wigger." Take a look at the emails here. Looks like fair game.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

SPONSORED BY: BOLD MOVES: THE FUTURE OF FORD Step behind the curtain at Ford Motor. Goodwin was the cat that got Bron that $90 million deal with Nike. But what was even more shocking is that LeBron hired his "boys" to manage his career and the King James Brand. Three years later, it looks like James and his crew knew what they were doing. In a profile for 'Esquire' magazine, James explains the reason he launched his LRMR Sports Marketing Company with his childhood friends.

"I thought if I stopped playing basketball right now, what would my friends have to look back on? They wouldn't have anything to look back on," LeBron told the magazine. "For me to grow as a businessman, and for me to become a man, I decided I've got to start working with guys I can trust -- my friends. Now I don't need to be there for them to get into places, high-prestige places, or to have a business meeting with somebody. LeBron doesn't have to be there."

LRMR: The L stands for LeBron, R for Richard Paul, M for Maverick Carter, and R for Randy Mims, all of them tight homeboys since they were kids. Maverick is responsible for the day-to-day activities of the James brand while LeBron can concentrate on being a better basketball player. But that's not the only thing the crew is designed to do.

"What are we doing differently?" Maverick told the magazine. "One thing we do differently, we like to control -- well, control is a bad word -- we like to be involved in every aspect of the brand we're partnered with: who they're advertising with, what the advertiser looks like -- if it's a commercial, then who's the director? We really strive on the management side once a deal is done, so it becomes a partnership, not just a deal where they pay LeBron, he shows up."

From Coca-Cola, to State Farm, to MSN and a plethora of other "partnerships," looks like there's no slowing down for this team.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

SPONSORED BY: BOLD MOVES: THE FUTURE OF FORD Step behind the curtain at Ford Motor. Apparently there was quite a battle between publishers about who would get the rights to the book. Word is that the bidding got up to $1.3 million, but Grand Central Publishing aren't saying how much they put down for the book.

"Serena Williams is one of the world's most remarkable athletes," Grand Central editor Karen Kosztolnyik said Tuesday in a statement. "We've watched her rise to No. 1 despite physical and emotional setbacks, and her hard work and determination have inspired legions of fans young and old. Serena will give her memoir a strong motivational slant."At just 26 years old, Serena Williams has won 18 Grand Slam titles; nine in singles, seven in doubles with her sister, Venus Williams, two mixed doubles and two Olympic gold medals in women's doubles. She's currently ranked the #1 tennis player in the world.

Magic hosted the event while Arenas coached one of the basketball teams which consisted of local celebrities. The event raised more than $600,000 for six local nonprofits that help the homeless in the region.

"Homelessness is a firsthand experience for me," Arenas said. "I want children to grow up in a safe and happy environment and I want all families to be able to overcome hardships and get back on their feet and into a home of their own, much like my father did for me. Freddie Mac's Hoops for the Homeless is a wonderful event, and I am excited to be back again this year to help fight family homelessness."Other celebrities who participated in the event included former Washington Redskins' Tyronne Drakeford, Reggie Evans and Brig Owens and former Washington Senator Chuck Hinton.

"I am thrilled to be back again this year to support Freddie Mac's Hoops for the Homeless," Magic said. "As someone who is deeply committed to helping create brighter futures for children and families, I am especially proud to be part of this important and needed event."

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

SPONSORED BY: BOLD MOVES: THE FUTURE OF FORD Step behind the curtain at Ford Motor. "Right now we're making t-shirts, hopefully I can start making the hats. I have a lot of 'em at my house. What I'm trying to do, you know how you create the buzz? Try to wear them, then people try to say, 'Where'd you get them from?' You know, I don't want to put all my money into it and it doesn't sell."

Stevenson has been promoting the name, 2Family, for a little while now. Inspired by his jersey number and the people responsible for his success, it's tattooed all over his body and he made rubber bracelets with the name that he wears during games. Over the summer, fans got a glimpse of the 2Family logo on a t-shirt during a silly lip-sync performance of Usher's "Love in this Club," hit. Alexander may be unemployed right now (he was released by the Seattle Seahawks in April), but he's spending his time and money on kids and chess. The former NFL MVP announced that donated $25,000 from his foundation to America's Foundation for Chess(AF4C) to help bring the thinking man's game to second and third grade students in and around his home state of Kentucky.

"Chess is a terrific game to help children become better thinkers," Alexander said in a statement. "That's why we are teaming up with America's Foundation for Chess to help bring the game into Kentucky's second and third-grade classrooms."

According to AF4C, studies have shown that chess helps advance children's critical thinking skills and test scores. A study on the New York City School Chess Program found that students who learn chess show dramatic improvement in their ability to think rationally. Students who participated in school chess clubs at four Houston-area schools improved their math and reading scores at twice the rate of other students.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

SPONSORED BY: BOLD MOVES: THE FUTURE OF FORD Step behind the curtain at Ford Motor.
