Bermuda Music Festival 2008: Alicia Keys Shimmers & Shine In the Face Of Media Relations Mayhem

When Alicia Keys performed her hit song, 'You Don't Know My Name,' last night at the closing of the "2008 Bermuda Music Festival," it sounded as if the heavens opened up and the angels were singing.

I had no idea that the title of the song would have a double entendre when pertaining to how the media corps, who were invited to cover the festival, were treated. But that comes later in this piece.

Keys' beautiful singing was a welcomed reprieve for a four-day event that featured some of the biggest acts in music (namely Beyonce Knowles and UB40), who had to play second fiddle to torrential rainstorms on the idyllic Atlantic Ocean island.

Luckily for the 'If I Ain't Got You' singer, the sky was in sync with her smooth and harmonious song styling.

Dressed in some type of shimmery, Avant Garde get-up, the tanned and talented beauty performed a 90 minute-plus set at the National Sports Centre to a capacity crowd that seemed to hang onto her every word.

"I love being in this city," the 11-time Grammy Award winner told the audience shortly after hitting the stage at 11 p.m. From the moment she grabbed the microphone, the pony-tailed princess sang hit after hit – and even some lesser known songs – to rapturous applause.

Slick Rick: Dapper Rapper Among 'Hip Hop Honors' Recipients

By Brennan Williams, BlackVoices.com

Some may consider today's hip-hop music scene to be dead due to lack luster lyrics and sales. However, that wasn't the case last night when fans packed New York City's Hammerstein Ballroom for the fifth annual 'VH1 Hip Hop Honors.'

Hosted by funnyman Tracy Morgan, this year's guests and honorees (which included Cypress Hill, De La Soul, Naughty By Nature, Slick Rick, and Too Short) raised the bar to another level!

When it came to bringing a fresh, nostalgic sense of style to this year's show, Slick Rick is hip-hop's royal highness. Spending his early years in England heavily influenced Rick the Ruler (born Ricky Walters) to fuse the countries lavish lifestyle to hip-hop culture.

Bringing his English roots mixed with his associations with fellow New York MCs Dana Dane and Doug E. Fresh helped spawned a string of classic hits including 'Young World,' 'Children's Story,' and 'La Di Da Di.'

Philadelphia native Eve and MC Lyte took a new meaning onto Rick's legacy when they graced the stage for 'Mona Lisa' and 'The Ruler's Back,' while Biz Markie provided his signature style beat box for Ghostface Killah's rendition of 'Lodi Dodi.'

Following the tribute sets of Busta Rhymes, Fabolous, and Dana Dane, MC Ricky D (as he is also known as) graced the Hammerstein Ballroom draped in all of his gold jewelry to tell everyone his 'Children's Story.'

Some were thrown in a loop, once the rapper walked off the stage after just performing one song from his extensive catalog.

The Week That Was: Cedric The Entertainer, Jay-Z, Tyra Banks, Shrek & Regina Belle

By Karu F. Daniels, BlackVoices.com

'Buffalo' Soldiers: Funnyman Cedric The Entertainer will make his Broadway debut in the Broadway revival of David Mamet's 'American Buffalo' at the end of the month, and the Hollywood heavyweight is siked about hitting the boards with Tony Award nominated comedy actor John Leguizamo and Academy Award nominee Haley Joel Osment in Robert Falls-helmed version of the comedic drama. "I'm really excited to do this because I've had an opportunity to perform on many stages here in New York and to do this, it's big," one of the original 'Kings of Comedy' told BlackVoices.com during an intimate gathering unveiling of the show at B. Smith's in New York City on Sept. 29. "I've done some [plays] in high schools ... but this is the first time, other than stand-up, to perform live, onstage but then also need the response of the others, and I haven't really done it like this before," the television and film comedy star continued. "And then to do it on the highest level, doing it on Broadway in New York City, it's going to be a test." Considered a "classic" by theater purists, 'Buffalo,' follows three small-time crooks who wax philosophically about society while conspiring to steal a rare and valuable coin from a neighborhood collector. Leguizamo, who previously won raves for two Broadway comedy shows ('Sexaholics' and 'Freak') and starred with Cedric The Entertainer in an ill-fated movie adaptation of 'The Honeymooners,' said it's his favorite play – seeing it on The Great White Way when he was a kid when Al Pacino starred in the 1983 version. "It was the greatest piece of theater that I've ever seen," he shared. "There's nothing like this. This has influenced a lot of writers, a lot of directors. Everyone started writing like him." 'American Buffalo' begins performances October 31 at the Belasco Theatre.

2008 Bermuda Music Festival: Beyonce Wowing Wet Crowd, Readying New Project

Yes, Beyonce Knowles is married.

Yes, she's still putting out her brand new album next month.

And yes, she's still wowing international audiences with her exhilarating performances.

Last night, the multiple Grammy Award winning superstar weathered tropical rain storms and delivered an over-two-hour set of songs and dance that thrilled eager masses at the National Sports Centre on the tiny, little island of Bermuda.

It was her first show since performing overseas last November. And the 'Bootylicious' diva was in tip-top form.

From the Destiny's Child chart-toppers 'Survivor,' 'Independent Woman,' and the near 10-year-old platter 'Say My Name,' to her solo hits 'Dangerously In Love,' 'Me, Myself and I,' 'Get Me Bodied' and the song she said was her favorite to sing, 'Irreplaceable,' Beyonce gave the drenched audience a whole lot more than they bargained for, with what seemed like an endless stream of infectious songs.

Unlike other "divas," who perform at Caribbean music festivals, the 'Dreamgirls' star didn't hold back on all of her vocal bravado -- and didn't restrict massive jumbotron screens from getting up-close and personal visuals of her while sweating up a storm of her very own onstage.

'Revealed' also contains 'The Word,' 'I'm Alive,' 'Reveal My Heart,' and Deitrick's personal story of triumph on 'Soul Survivor.' With the album being so diverse Haddon believes Gospel music can be "just as big as rock and fill stadiums around the world." So far the label has released critically acclaimed albums from the likes of Trick Daddy, Trina, Rick Ross, and Plies. Having such a talented roster will usher in 'Slip-N-Slide Greatest Hits' compilation set to hit stores at the top of 2009. "We will continue to spread our wings by forming sub-labels under Slip-N-Slide Records and offer support to artists who would like to start their own record labels," CEO Ted Lucas said.

    9/4/08: LL Cool J / Richie Sambora
With his current single 'Baby' from the forthcoming album 'Exit 13' in heavy rotation throughout media outlets, LL Cool J is planning to add an edgier twist to the track. The man ladies call Cool James has hooked up with none other than Bon Jovi's Richie Sambora for a rock-edge remix. "We creatively put our heads together," LL explained. "I told him I wanted that talk box. 'Slippery When Wet' by Bon Jovi's is one of my favorite albums. I thought the talk box on a couple of the songs was incredible, 'Livin' on a Prayer' especially. So, I got Richie to do it on the 'Baby' remix. It sounds crazy. Then he did some vocals, and he did some guitar solos ... so it's good." The track is currently available through iTunes. 'Exit 13' hit stores September 9.

    9/4/08: Yolanda Adams

Records Inc. The multilayer deal will consist of the label. tying in various endorsements, which include TV and film opportunities leading up to her debut solo album expected to drop in 2009. "I'm so excited about my new solo deal with Warner- it's been a long time coming," she said. "It's important for me to give my fans the Diamond they already know, but to also give them something new from me! I hope to work with a few of my favorite people in the industry, from Timbaland to T-Pain on my new album, so there's definitely going to be a few surprises in store!"

    9/4/08: DMX
Despite facing all his legal woes, DMX (born Earl Simmons) still seems to have his mind on his money. The rapper is currently shopping around a series based on his recent court ordeals. The show tentatively titled, 'DMX: This Life of Mine' will feature the MC going through the stages of avoiding prison time for a number of his charges including animal cruelty charges, theft, and possession of drug paraphernalia to name a few. "In many ways, my life has been an open book," DMX (born Earl Simmons) told Allhiphop.com. "[But] I haven't always been the one writing the story. With this show; however, people will get to see and hear with their own eyes and ears what really goes on in my life and I think they'll come to understand me a little bit better with each episode."

9/4/08: Wyclef Jean / Venus Williams

Enter Grammy Award-winning musician/producer Wyclef Jean, who has written and recorded a new song titled, 'Venus (I'm Ready),' inspired by tennis champion Venus Williams. The song is expected to be used as Williams' theme song during the 2008 US Open tennis tournament which ends September 7. "He is an amazing human being and it is truly an honor for me to be recognized in such a wonderful way by such a gifted musician and exceptional person." The Venus Williams, Wyclef Jean episode of 'Iconoclasts' is scheduled to premiere November 13 at 10PM ET on the Sundance Channel.

While androgynous images of entertainers have long appeared in movies and depictions of homosexuals on television are more present than ever, this season the new trend on reality TV may have been transgender contestants.

Until just a few months ago, transgender characters have been relegated to scripted television series like 'Boston Legal,' 'Ugly Betty,' 'Dirty Sexy Money' and 'All My Children.' Recently, two contestants have showcased the ups and downs of being transgender while vying for the top prize on two of TV's most popular shows.

The Gender Benders

'Everybody Hates Chris': Still Representing Black Families On TV

Posted Oct 1st 2008 12:12PM by Karu F. Daniels

By Karu F. Daniels, BlackVoices.com

After making a big splash with a massive marketing campaign for its launch three years ago, The CW show 'Everybody Hates Chris' returns to the airwaves Oct. 3 for a fourth season.

Yes, on the "sure-to-kill-a-beloved-series time-slot" of Friday.

Not sure what went into the genius thinking of this scheduling shift (the show originally aired on Thursday, then Monday and then Sunday), but let's hope this show (like other black family sitcoms) will weather the storm and stand the test of time.

Starring Tyler James Williams in the title role, the hilarious show – the brainchild of Emmy Award-winning funnyman Chris Rock – revolves around the young life and crazy times of pubescent youth growing up in the Bedford Stuyvesant section of New York City.

Tichina Arnold (of 'Martin' fame) and Terry Crews ('White Chicks') plays Chris' parents, Rochelle and Julius, while Imani Hakim and Taquan Richmond plays his siblings Tonya and Drew.

'Everybody...' takes place during the 1980s with a soundtrack of burgeoning hip-hop and synthesized pop and R&B – making for a unique and crafty dose of nostalgia for television viewers. For its efforts, the show has garnered Emmy and Golden Globe Award nominations, and have become a critic's favorite.

Pop music icon Janet Jackson was hospitalized yesterday in Montreal due to an unspecified illness, forcing the singer-actress to cancel her scheduled show.

TMZ reports, Jackson "got suddenly ill during a sound check" for her current "Rock Witchu" tour before being rushed to
Royal Victoria hospital where she was released a few hours later, according to hospital rep Rebecca Burns.

In addition to canceling her Montreal date, Jackson also called off her September 26 tour stop in Detroit, stating "production constraints" as the reason for the last minute decision.

When it comes to donning the crown as reigning "Queen of Comedy," Trenton, New Jersey bred funnywoman Sommore is 'standing' in a league of her own. Hence, the title of the comedienne's new DVD 'The Queen Stands Alone,' which arrives in stores this week.

Written, produced and directed by Sommore and One Thousand Kisses, Inc., 'The Queen Stands Alone' is not only a career milestone for the actress-comedian, but it places her alongside Sarah Silverman as one of the highest paid female comedians on the Comedy Central network, where is debuted earlier this month.

"This is a show that I've waited oh so long to do," the first-time producer/director said. "I had other offers to do this at different times but I turned them down because I felt that I wasn't ready at that point in my career."

There's nothing scary to the idea of Spice Girl member Mel B posing nude for an adult magazine.

Last month the singer turned television personality (born Melanie Janine Brown), revealed to various media outlets that she had turned down two offers to appear in 'Playboy' magazine over the past year, despite leaving the opportunity open for a later date.

"I was offered Playboy last year and again a couple of months ago, and I did turn them down, but that's not to say I wouldn't consider it in the future," she said. "I have no problems walking around the house naked or anything."

Well it appears Hugh Hefner has stepped his game up for the voluptuous star.

According to London's 'Mirror' newspaper, last week the two parties came to an agreement for six figures that will lead Brown to appear nude in a forthcoming issue.

Who would've ever thought starring in a Disney Broadway musical could be so life threatening?

Unfortunately that was the case for 51-year old actor-singer Adrian Bailey, who severely injured himself during a May 10 matinee performance of 'The Little Mermaid.'

Bailey fell through a trap door on the deck of a suspended boat prior to the start of the performance, which lead the actor to suffer from fractured wrists, a broken back, a shattered pelvis, a fractured sternum, several fractured ribs and a fractured foot.

All of this for Ariel?

Following the accident, a court petition was filed on May 14 with the Manhattan Supreme Court. Now the singing actor is filing a lawsuit against Disney.

Television audiences better brace themselves!

Something new, fresh and raw is coming to the airwaves. And that's always a very good thing.

On Sept. 29, MTV will boldly go where they've never gone before with the new show 'Man and Wife,' hosted by in-demand hip-hop personality Fatman Scoop and his beautifully voluptuous wife, Shanda Freeman.

Some of the music network's most memorable moments include a flatulent Howard Stern flying up above in an astronaut uniform, superdiva Diana Ross molesting Lil' Kim's exposed breast and Madonna lip-locking with Britney Spears – all in front of a live television audience.

But nothing compares their new late-night offering, which is a wild romp of comedy, advice and in-your-face reality that will surely whet the palate of many TV viewers looking for something really real.

"It's such a larger audience,' Scoop told BlackVoices.com this week about his first foray into late-night TV. "There's a lot of people that know 'Man and Wife' but there's a lot of people who don't."

The super-sized hip-hop hype-man is no stranger to mainstream audiences. His booming baritone has blazed an endless stream of hit tracks featuring the biggest names in music, including Mariah Carey, Missy "Misdemeanor" Elliott, Busta Rhymes, Ciara, Timabland, Diddy, Lil' Wayne and The Pussycat Dolls.

What makes this spotlight different from others is its wide reach, he says: "It's the biggest mix of people. Anyone who can turn on a television, you're in front of them now. That is crack babies, that is white supremacists, that is jailbirds. That's everything."

In The 'Club'
: Reality TV vixen Omarosa Manigault-Stallworth is showing no signs of slowing down on the eve of the release of her debut book, 'The Bitch Switch: Knowing How to Turn It Off And On.' Because of high demand, the Phoenix Books tome's release date has been moved up a month earlier and arrives in stores next week. And the star of Donald Trump's hit series, 'The Apprentice,' couldn't be more excited about it. A battery of friends and well wishers showed up in their finest duds to New York City's historic Friars Club on Sept. 22 to witness the Ohio-born beauty get roasted by a slew of promising comedic upstarts (for the 'So You Think You Can Roast' online contest). The one and only laugh legend Paul Mooney was on hand serving as the roast master of the evening – and the writer of shows such as 'Good Times,' 'Sanford and Son,' 'In Living Color,' and 'Chappelle's Show' didn't disappoint. "I love the idea of [Omarosa]," he shared. "Because I love the idea of anything that's black from the Cleopatra days that can get some sort of attention is fantastic ... she's Nefertiti coming back to get her money." Mooney, who performs what seems like a monthly residency at Carolines On Broadway, also revealed that he will finally unveil his very own book, 'Too Black For Hollywood,' due out next year.
